More ‘Current’ needed for a good break to Sushant Sri Nag Corporation banner entered the Tollywood to promote Sushant, nephew of Nagarjuna, as hero. His debut film on the banner is ‘Kalidasu’ where he played a mass hero and it remained an average grosser. However, the debutant hero earned recognition with his ease in dances. The same producers and banner decide to promote him further and brought out ‘Current’ (Connecting Heartbeat) as their second project. Surya Pratap, who worked for many films in Suresh Productions and a protégé of Sukumar and ‘Bommarillu’ Bhaskar, was introduced as director and it was said that Devisri Prasad, who was impressed with the storyline, volunteered to score music. Sushant (Sushant) is the son of an engineer (Tanikella Bharani), who had frequent transfers. As a result, Sushant could not make friends of his own at any place. However, Sushant is one such person, who doesn’t think about the past and worry about future. He always wants to live in present. Once he reaches Vizag, he gets attracted to a sweet voice and finds that it is of Sneha (Sneha Ullal). He gets admitted to an engineering college and to his surprise, she is from his same class. Sneha is the daughter of a magistrate (Charan Raj). Sneha gets complete freedom as her father trusts her that she will not commit any mistake and she had a clear vision about her future and goal. Sushant tries to befriend with Sneha, but she keeps neglecting him. Sneha had a habit of fearing something to happen as she always dreams of something. Noticing this, Sushant plays tricks and makes her believe that their meeting in the night is just a dream. However, Sneha realizes the truth and accepts his love. However, their joy doesn’t last long, after Sneha’s father refuses her alliance with Sushant as he has no target in his life and always wants to live in present which serves no purpose. Sushant is also firm that he can’t change his attitude for the sake of others. So, Sneha and Sushant decide to separate, but Sneha demands Sushant to erase the love in her heart, as it was he who ignited the fire in her by playing tricks. The latter too tries in many ways to develop hatred, but he could not succeed. As negative tricks did not work, he starts making positive efforts. Finally, Sneha declares that she hated him and has no feelings about him. Sushant puts a bold face before his friends that he was able to erase love from her heart, but he silently cries. Unable to look at his plight, Sushant’s parents decide to take him away. But, Sneha realizes that love can’t be erased when it takes birth once and rushes to the railway station. The film ends on a happy note with the union of Sushant and Sneha. PERFORMANCE: Though Sushant is not new to the camera, he still needs to improve his body language. Especially, he had to better his facial expressions as it looked quite blank in most of the scenes. He needs to improve his performance during sentiment scenes and love scenes. He should realize that mere ease in dances is not enough to become a successful hero. Sneha Ullal is okay in her role, but she too needs to improve her body language. Of course, she filled the glamour slot well, but could not follow the dubbing properly with no sync in lip movement with the voice. Tanikella Bharani and Sudha played the roles of hero’s parents, while Charan Raj played a positive role as heroine’s father. All the three did justice to their roles and proved that seniority counts in acting. Comedy by Brahmanandam failed to tickle the funny bone of audiences, this time. Music by Devisri Prasad is an asset for the film. He gave youthful tunes to all the songs, though a couple of tunes reminded some of his old songs. However, he appeared a little casual when it comes to re-recording. Anyone who closely follows the music of Devisri Prasad could easily find that the re-recording was not monitored by him personally. Camera by Vijay C Kumar is okay and the shades and angles in songs did work well. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is just okay and he should have avoided jerks in scenes and abrupt closure of certain scenes because of the use of his sharp scissors. The major draw back in the film is the poor characterization by the director. His immaturity is very clearly visible as he failed to establish several scenes properly. He could not explain how and why he failed in the first two scenes after the interval bang, when the hero appears before the heroine boozing and why should he resort to prostitution and getting arrested in a brothel case especially while trying to create a bad impression on him to the heroine. Haphazard screenplay, poor narration, and trying to build a story with a delicate storyline, ‘removal of love from one’s heart’, proved costly for the hero Sushant, who was looking for a break at least with the second film. The production values of Sri Nag Corporation are excellent. ANALYSIS: Going by Sushant’s style of performance, he appeared to be good at mass films instead of going for soft love stories. The change over of image failed to suit him. The director made a vain bid to explain that lLove is the chemistry that works in the physical bodies of a youth and a girl, it passes like electricity (current). But he forgot to explain it properly on the screen and it appeared a one-sided affair all through the film, with the hero trying to drag a girl into the love for some time and separate with her for some time. Though not boring, the film has nothing much to offer either to the youth or general audiences.
